Car rental in Tirana, Albania: what to know

Airport car rental in Tirana

Tirana is Albania's only airport that rents cars, and the handover is either at a desk in the terminal or in the car park just outside it. Which one applies to your booking is written on the voucher.

The airport is seventeen kilometres from central Tirana and about forty minutes from Durres, so it is the practical pickup point for the whole centre of the country; check the desk's opening hours if you land late.

Car rental conditions

Bring your passport and a valid driving licence. A foreign licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is expected alongside it when the licence is not written in the Latin alphabet.

The minimum age is usually 21 with at least one to two years of licence held. Drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver surcharge, and the SUV and minivan classes commonly set the threshold higher.

Albanian local companies are unusually flexible about the deposit: a card hold is the norm but cash deposits and debit cards are widely accepted. It is still an offer-level rule, so read the specific tariff.

Settle the border question before you book. Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia are all within a few hours, and every crossing needs the supplier's written permission and a green card arranged in advance.

Car brands and categories

The catalog covers the main rental categories:

  • Economy
  • Comfort
  • SUV
  • Minivan
  • Premium
  • Convertible
  • Electric
  • Hybrid

Albanian fleets are built mostly around Volkswagen Golf and Passat, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i20, Dacia Duster and older Mercedes saloons and similar models, and a manual gearbox is still the cheaper default — confirm the transmission on the offer card if you need an automatic.

Compare the total price together with the deposit, insurance excess, mileage policy, fuel rule, cross-border permission, accepted payment methods and the return conditions.

Airport pickup details

Have your passport, licence, voucher and the main driver's card for the deposit ready before you reach the desk, and photograph the bodywork, glass and wheels during the joint inspection.

If the trip crosses into Greece, Montenegro or Kosovo, confirm the written permission and the green card at the desk — the barrier is not the place to discover they are missing.

SUV rental

An SUV is close to necessary north of Shkoder: the road to Theth and the tracks around Komani lake are unsurfaced, steep and single-lane.

Ground clearance does not extend the insurance, though — unsurfaced roads stay outside the cover on most tariffs, so agree that specifically before you go.

Car rental essentials in Albania

Practical points on traffic, documents, payment, insurance, road quality, border permission, parking and vehicle return.

  • Road quality: The SH trunk roads are good and new; the roads off them are neither.
  • The Llogara pass: A thousand metres of hairpins between Vlore and the riviera; descend in a low gear.
  • Airport desk: The handover is either at a terminal desk or at an office just outside it.
  • Flight tracking: Give the flight number so a delayed arrival does not release the car.
  • Handover inspection: Photograph the bodywork, glass and wheels with the agent present before you drive off.
  • Out-of-hours pickup: Late arrivals are common in season; check the surcharge before booking.
  • Security deposit: A card hold is the norm, but cash deposits and no-deposit tariffs are widely available.
  • Driving licence: Bring the original valid licence accepted by the supplier for that class.
  • Passport: A valid passport is required at pickup.
  • Insurance excess: Check the excess amount and exactly what a full-cover package removes.
  • International Driving Permit: A licence not in the Latin alphabet needs one, and the traffic police do check.
  • Cross-border permission: Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia all need written consent and a green card.
  • Minimum age: Usually 21 and over, with a young-driver surcharge below 25.
  • Return procedure: Refuel nearby, allow time for the handover and keep the signed return document.

Useful information for renters

Parking and roads

Albania drives on the right. Central parking is informal: an attendant in a hi-vis vest takes a few hundred lek and watches the car, and a guarded lot is the safer option overnight. There are no motorway vignettes and only one toll in the country, on the Kalimash tunnel road towards Kosovo.

Car pickup

At the airport a car is usually handed over:
  • at a desk inside the terminal;
  • in the airport car park after a counter check-in;
  • at an office a short shuttle ride away;
  • at an agreed address after landing.

The handover point and any out-of-hours fee are set by the supplier.

Payment and currency

Albania uses the lek (ALL), and the euro is widely accepted for larger payments although change comes back in lek.

Rates on this page are shown in euro, while fuel, parking, the tunnel toll and any fines are normally settled in lek under the supplier's terms.

Popular routes

From Tirana, common road trips include:

  • Kruje castle
  • Dajti mountain
  • Durres
  • Shkoder

Popular nearby areas include the castle and bazaar of Kruje, the cable car up Dajti mountain, the Bovilla reservoir and the Roman amphitheatre at Durres.
