Choosing a car

Renting a convertible: what to know

A convertible is booked for the drive itself rather than for transport. That makes it a good choice on coastal routes and a poor one for airport runs with luggage.

Where it works

Coastal roads, scenic loops and short evening drives are where an open roof earns its premium. The car becomes part of the day rather than the means of getting through it.

It works far less well as a general-purpose vehicle: boot space is reduced by the folding roof, rear seats are usually token, and open-top driving is unpleasant in midday heat or heavy traffic.

Roof type matters

Soft top

Lighter and quicker to fold, but noisier at speed and more vulnerable when parked. Never leave anything visible inside.

Retractable hard top

Quieter and more secure when closed, at the cost of boot space when folded. Check how much luggage room remains with the roof down.

Heat, sun and timing

In hot climates open-top driving is comfortable in the morning and evening and punishing in the middle of the day. Plan the roof-down legs accordingly.

Sun exposure is significant over several hours; the cabin also heats quickly when parked, so shaded parking is worth seeking out.

Security and terms to check

  • Never leave luggage or bags visible in an open or soft-top car.
  • Check whether the insurance treats roof damage as an exclusion.
  • Confirm the boot capacity with the roof stowed, not just closed.
  • Expect a higher deposit than an equivalent closed car.

FAQ

Is a convertible practical for a whole trip?

Usually not. Reduced boot space and token rear seats make it better as a driving car than a general-purpose one.

Soft top or hard top?

Hard tops are quieter and more secure closed; soft tops fold faster and leave more boot space when down.

Is it comfortable in hot weather?

Roof down is pleasant morning and evening, uncomfortable at midday. The parked cabin also heats up very quickly.

Is the deposit higher?

Generally yes — convertibles sit in a higher-value bracket than equivalent closed cars.

Is roof damage covered by insurance?

Often not fully. Check whether the roof mechanism and fabric are listed as exclusions.
