Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Zagreb all hand cars over either at a desk in the terminal or at an off-airport office reached by shuttle. Which one applies to your booking is written on the voucher, and the shuttle is usually what explains a lower price.

Split airport is in Kastela rather than Split itself and Dubrovnik's is at Cilipi, twenty kilometres from the old town, so the airport is the practical pickup point for the whole coast either way.

Two things are worth settling before you book: whether the tariff allows a car ferry to the islands, and whether it allows the crossing into Bosnia at Neum on the way south. Both need the supplier's written consent.

Have your passport, licence, voucher and the main driver's card for the deposit ready before you reach the desk, and photograph the bodywork, glass and wheels during the joint inspection.

If the plan includes an island or the road south past Neum, confirm the ferry and border permission at the desk rather than at the ramp.

Automatic car rental

An automatic makes the coast road and the queues at the ferry ramps far less tiring, and it is the easier choice for the steep approaches to a hillside old town.

It is the minority option in Croatia and books out first in July and August, so reserve early and confirm the transmission on the offer card.
