At Moroccan airports a car is handed over either at a desk in the arrivals hall or at an office in the car park a short walk away. Which one applies to your booking is written on the voucher, and the walk is usually what explains a lower price.

Marrakech, Casablanca, Agadir and Tangier all run late into the night; check the desk's opening hours, whether the supplier tracks the flight number and what an out-of-hours handover costs.

Car rental conditions

Bring your passport and a valid driving licence. A foreign licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is expected alongside it when the licence is not written in the Latin alphabet — checkpoints do ask.

The minimum age is usually 21 with at least one to two years of licence held, though many Moroccan suppliers set 23 or 25. Drivers under 25 normally pay a young-driver surcharge, and the SUV and premium classes set the threshold higher again.

A deposit is standard and is blocked on the main driver's credit card at handover. The dirham is a closed currency you cannot buy before you arrive, so a cash deposit is usually taken in euro instead — confirm which the desk expects.

Read the exclusions before you plan a desert day. The unsurfaced pistes south of the Atlas are outside the cover on most tariffs, along with tyres, glass, the underbody and sand damage.

Moroccan fleets are built mostly around Dacia Logan, Sandero and Duster, Renault Clio, Fiat Panda, Peugeot 208 and Hyundai i10 and similar models — Dacia is assembled in Tangier and dominates the rental market — and a manual gearbox is the default. Confirm the transmission on the offer card if you need an automatic.

Compare the total price together with the deposit, insurance excess, mileage policy, fuel rule, what the cover excludes off tarmac, accepted payment methods and the return conditions.

Airport pickup details

Have your passport, licence, voucher and the main driver's card ready before you reach the desk, and photograph the bodywork, glass and wheels during the joint inspection — a Moroccan rental car has usually seen a lot of road.

Change money before you leave the terminal: the dirham cannot be bought abroad, and the first toll barrier or fuel stop will not take a card everywhere.
