Car hire in Morocco runs from a Dacia Logan for the city and the toll autoroute to a four-wheel drive for the Atlas passes and the desert pistes. Most offers include basic cover, and booking stays simple: you normally need a passport, a driving licence, a phone number and a payment card. Rates are quoted in euro while fuel, tolls and parking are paid in dirham.
A car is useful in Agadir for destinations such as Paradise Valley in the Anti-Atlas, the surf breaks at Taghazout and Imsouane, the Souss-Massa park and the silver souk at Tiznit, especially with several stops in a day or with luggage.
If your plans stay inside the medina, compare driving with the shared grand taxis, CTM coaches and the train; the lanes take no cars at all and a guarded lot plus a petit taxi is usually the cheaper answer.
Bring your passport and a valid driving licence. A foreign licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is expected alongside it when the licence is not written in the Latin alphabet — checkpoints do ask.
The minimum age is usually 21 with at least one to two years of licence held, though many Moroccan suppliers set 23 or 25. Drivers under 25 normally pay a young-driver surcharge, and the SUV and premium classes set the threshold higher again.
A deposit is standard and is blocked on the main driver's credit card at handover. The dirham is a closed currency you cannot buy before you arrive, so a cash deposit is usually taken in euro instead — confirm which the desk expects.
Read the exclusions before you plan a desert day. The unsurfaced pistes south of the Atlas are outside the cover on most tariffs, along with tyres, glass, the underbody and sand damage.
