Renting a car abroad with a Russian driving licence

A Russian driving licence on its own does not guarantee that a car will be handed over. Two separate things have to line up: the country's rules must recognise the document, and the individual supplier must agree to accept it.

Why acceptance is not automatic

Rental companies act within both local law and their own internal policy. A country may formally recognise a licence while a particular supplier still declines it, or asks for an International Driving Permit in addition.

That is why the safest question to ask is not "is this licence valid here" but "will this specific supplier release the car on this licence, on my travel dates".

What usually gets asked for

The original licence

The plastic original is required. A photo, a scan or a copy is not accepted at handover, however clear the image.

An International Driving Permit

Where a licence is not fully duplicated in Latin script, the permit is frequently requested. It has to be valid and presented together with the national licence, never instead of it.

A certified translation

Some suppliers ask for a notarised translation rather than, or in addition to, the permit. This varies by company more than by country.

Payment is a separate question

Document acceptance and payment acceptance are independent. Even where the licence is fine, the card may not be: cards issued by some banks are declined by foreign payment systems.

Check which cards the supplier accepts and how the deposit is taken, so that a document approval does not turn into a payment refusal at the counter.

How to confirm before paying

Ask in writing

Request confirmation by email or chat and keep the reply. A written answer is far more useful than a verbal assurance if the position changes at handover.

Ask about your dates

Rules change. Confirmation given for one month does not automatically hold for the next, so ask specifically about your travel dates.

Carry every document

Bring the national licence, the permit if you have one, the passport and the booking voucher. It costs nothing and removes most of the risk.

FAQ

Is a Russian licence enough on its own?

It depends on the country and the supplier. In many cases an International Driving Permit is requested alongside it.

Does an International Driving Permit solve everything?

No. It supports the national licence but does not override a supplier's own policy on accepted documents.

Can a supplier refuse after the booking is paid?

Yes, if the documents do not meet the stated terms. That is why written confirmation before payment matters.

Is a translation better than a permit?

Neither is universally better — some suppliers want one, some the other. Ask which the specific company requires.

What should I do if I am unsure?

Choose a supplier that states its document policy clearly and confirms your case in writing before you pay.
